COUNTRY FIRST
My cousin sent me this last night. (thanks Deb)
I cound’t have said it better myself-
“John McCain has been tested in more ways than anyone who has ever run for the presidency. What do honor and sacrifice really mean to you? Are they just words on posters or do they strike a cord deep within you? In the face of real danger, have you ever met evil face to face? Few of us have. John McCain has—in the hell hole of a North Vietnamese prison. He got challenged in a way he never anticipated to discover what he truly valued. In solitary confinement for years, he was punched and kicked till he was bloody and raw. He lost teeth. His bones were broken. He was twisted backward, tied into a ball and hung up from a hook–for hours. His bones were broken again. His ligaments were cut. An admiral’s son, he was offered early release. That would mean a real hospital with a bed, hot food, [and] fresh air–not living in his own waste mixed with his own blood. He refused. He knew men had been there longer than he had. They deserved to be released before him. He valued them, his fellow countrymen, first. He would stay and tough it out, no matter how long it took. It took 5 years. Where does one find the faith to hold on in such circumstances, to retain one’s sense of self esteem, and to survive to preserve the values we hold dear with honor? What does it say about a man’s love of his countrymen and love of his country to have endured such unimagined torture that to this day he can’t lift his arms? What does it say about each of us, about our country, that we produce such men, that we produced a John McCain, that he is one of us?
Contrast John McCain’s vote to stay in prison for his countrymen with Barack
Obama’s voting “present” over 100 times when a state senator in Illinois. You know what McCain stands for, what he values. What does Obama value? He avoids revealing his school records, his medical records, his birth certificate, and where he stood years ago with a yes or no vote. He told Charlie Gibson of ABC that people should know where he stands because he has talked so much. He’s right about one thing, he talks a lot. Actions speak louder than words. John McCain acted in the interest of his fellow pilots, sacrificing himself by refusing early release from abuse that left him unable to dance. Obama brags he dances better than John McCain. Obama has never sacrificed himself for anyone else. He has chosen to advance his political career through friendships with the far left fringe of Chicago politics. Always acting in his own interest, he gives long winded excuses denying any responsibility for the company he keeps. Do you really believe him when he claims he never heard his pastor of 20 years, Rev. Wright yelling “god damn America” from the pulpit? I don’t. If he didn’t agree with what he heard, why did he stay at that church? Would you?
John McCain accepted responsibility for the lives and morale of his fellow prisoners by refusing release. He sought and got accountability for the unfair awarding of a multi-million dollar defense contract because the bidder violated the rules. Obama’s notion of accountability is to lecture us on why he is not answerable for Acorn’s massive attempt at voter fraud in this election. He sat on Acorn’s board. He was Acorn’s legal advisor. He claims ignorance of the consequences of policies of this organization. He did not take a leadership role in unearthing this scandal. He did not demand that Acorn be held accountable and change its methods. Instead, his campaign gave them over $800,000 to help “get out the vote.”
John McCain understands leadership and the responsibility that comes with it. Leaders lead from the front, not the rear. In front, you usually stand alone. If you don’t have the guts to stand alone, you don’t deserve to be the leader. John McCain stood alone about the surge in Iraq, which succeeded in stabilizing the country. For all intents and purposes, that war is over and we won. Obama announced that he possessed superior judgment by opposing the surge, saying we would fail. We didn’t and he doesn’t. John McCain will be a commander-in-chief who appreciates the threat of international terrorism and knows how to command. Obama is a law professor who lectures us on how he intends to discuss our mistakes with evil people who want to destroy us, meeting them with no preconditions.
John McCain talks straight. At the Saddleback forum, he said: evil exists in the world and must be defeated. Obama, who never said anything good about this country without qualifying it first, gave a dissertation on evil, [and] then lectured us on how evil exists in this country. McCain believes life begins at conception. Obama said the answer to that question was “above his pay grade”, and lectured about the legal issues. You may not agree with McCain, but at least you know where he stands and he doesn’t assume you need a lecture on the subject.
John McCain believes in us, that we are self-reliant, capable, industrious, innovative and enterprising. His approach to issues involving taxes, health care, and energy is premised on his trust in us to make the right choice for ourselves. Obama believes in government, run by him. His approach to taxes and health care and energy is to make the choice for us. He will decide who has the ability to pay more and who has the greater need for it. He calls that fair. History calls it Marxism.
And what a candidate’s choice of a life partner reveals about him is enormous. To argue the candidate’s wife is not a consideration is naive nonsense. It matters. Every past first lady has had enormous impact on their husbands. Cindy McCain is an American original. Not only a wife and mother of four, she is also a business woman, foundation director and humanitarian. She formed the AMVT (American Voluntary Medical Team) and made 55 trips to war-torn and disaster sites taking emergency medical teams to minister to those affected. This is all done out of the public spotlight. She brought home 2 orphans from Bangladesh that needed life saving surgery. When Senator McCain asked who they were, Cindy said one, now 16 year old Bridgette, was their new daughter. The other girl was adopted by friends of theirs, who never saw a bill for the surgery that girl required. Barack Obama speaks proudly of how his wife, Michelle, is his primary advisor. She has revealed herself to be angry, crude and divisive. She boastfully puts this country down. In a New Yorker interview last March she whined: life is not good: we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is “just downright mean,” we are “guided by fear,” we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. It was Michelle who introduced her husband to the so-called Christian pastor who curses the country which she was not proud of for so long. Who do you want representing you?
The president and his wife are representatives of the best in this country. Obama is so taken with himself he refashioned the seal of the United States of America with his name on it: Obama for America. His web site showed little kids singing songs to the leader. He wanted to give his big European speech at the Brandenburg Gate, a powerful symbol where Kennedy and Reagan gave memorable speeches. The Germans saw through that and refused The One the chance to glorify himself.
We are at our best a humble people. We value people who take a stand to get the job done. Our values determined our unique destiny to lead the world. The man you know without doubt, without any reservation, who has earned your trust to always put his country first, to protect and preserve these values, which were purchased at such high price, is John McCain. He deserves your vote.”
