Petition for National GOP Primary

After receiving a moderate response, and feeling passionate about this issue, I have decided to build an on-line petition for a National GOP Presidential Primary to see if the idea will hold water.

Below is the text of the petition; you can click on the link to sign it if you agree, and if you’d like to be a co-sponsor, indicate in the comments.

Spread the word.

National GOP Presidential Primary

After this year’s primary (2008), it became apparent that GOP voters are no longer in control of who represents the party. Discouragement sets in when a candidate who don’t do well in a seemingly insignificant state drop out before another state’s primary occurs.

The purpose of this petition is to encourage the RNC to create a one day National Presidential primary that will allow every registered Republican the opportunity to vote for the GOP candidate that best represents their beliefs before the candidate chooses to drop out of the race.

The proposed rules for such a primary would be as follows:

  • A candidate may begin campaigning no sooner than 1 year prior to the day of the General Election;
  • The Primary shall be held the first Tuesday of the month of May of an election year;
  • Absentee ballots count;
  • Delegates count;
  • The primary will be held during the same 12 hour time period; independent of time zone. For example:
    • EDT voting will open at 12:00PM and close at 12:00AM;
    • CDT voting will open at 11:00AM and Close at 11:00PM;
    • MDT voting will open at 10:00AM and close at 10:00PM;
    • PDT voting will open at 9:00AM and Close at 9:00PM;
    • AKDT voting will open at 8:00AM and close at 8:00PM; and
    • HST voting will open at 6:00AM and close at 6:00PM

This method of holding a primary will provide each candidate with an equal opportunity to campaign, would not allow the media the opportunity to influence the outcome, and the winner will represent the GOP in November.

Thank you.

I signed. The times might need to be reworked, but it’s a good idea.

(I thought I had registered, but apparently not!)

Good idea, and I’ve signed it. Mentioning it today, and I am sure there will be work done on it, but an idea whose time has come.
